BUILDING THE PERFECT 2018 WEBSITE FOR GOOGLE
Google has launched its newest algorithm update and as usual, everyone is scrambling to make sense of it. The all-powerful, all-knowing Google has changed the game once again and learning the rules to the Google-game is quintessential to launching a successful website in 2018. But to understand Google’s intentions and algorithms fully, we need to take a step back and understand the changes Google have made with each update along with their motivation(s).
Google was heavily criticised back in 2010 both in the media and the web design world. Content farms ruled the digital plain and were excruciatingly difficult to operate without. In January of 2011, Google released an official statement;
"[We] hear the feedback from the web loud and clear: people are asking for even stronger action on content farms and sites that consist primarily of spammy or low-quality content."
The Google Panda Update
The Google Panda Update was launched in February 2011, clamping down on content farms, low-quality content and copied content. High quality, original content was regarded in high esteem by Google's algorithm, and whilst there have been countless updates by Google since then, quality content has remained a premium standard.
Why is this all relevant? Well Google have been attacked significantly in the past 12 months again by the media and web designers. This time there has been an issue with confirmation bias. Google has been accused of developing algorithms that promote news articles that do not fact check and lack adequate referencing. An accusation that has dented Google's reputation in a far more severe manner than content farms did in 2010. In response Google has released its 2018 algorithm updates to make adjustments similar to the Google Panda Update of 2011. By requesting website developers and owners improve the quality of their content even further. In particular, the metadata.
2018 Google Update
In 2017, website pages were required to display 156 characters in their metadata that referenced keywords and phrases for optimal Google search rankings. Some websites were able to manipulate this short requirement with factual inaccurate data and low quality content. In 2018, Google is now requesting each web page display 256 characters of metadata to further fact check and improve the quality of content. This update is largely viewed as an extension of the previous updates to control the quality of content posted on websites.
