The Problem
Bishops Adelaide Hills sits just 30 minutes from Adelaide at Basket Range, offering weekend breaks and extended stays in beautiful, private heritage houses set among a working cherry farm. Two things make this a harder marketing proposition than it first appears. Heritage accommodation sells almost entirely on how it looks and feels, which means the site lives or dies on photography rather than description. And the business runs two revenue streams from one property, accommodation and cherry production, each with its own audience and its own season. The site needed to serve both without either getting lost.
What JABA Built
JABA designed the original site around 2008, following an extensive photoshoot of the cottages and the surrounding cherry farm. The site has since been rebuilt on JABA CMSv5 with a more contemporary design, and JABA also created the branding for Bishops Adelaide Hills, extending it into signage and print graphics so the identity carries from the roadside through to the guest experience. More recently, an online shop was added to sell fresh cherries direct from the orchard. Having tried them, we can confirm the cherries live up to the reputation.
What Was Technically Interesting
The photography is the foundation of this project, not decoration on top of it. Booking decisions for heritage accommodation are made almost entirely on images, and shooting the cottages and orchard properly at the outset gave every subsequent version of the site the raw material to work with, which is why the design could be modernised over the years without starting again. Adding an online shop years later introduced a different challenge: cherries are a seasonal, perishable product, so the store has to operate intensely for a short window each summer and sit quietly the rest of the year, rather than running at a steady pace like conventional e-commerce. Building it into the existing site rather than as a separate storefront means the accommodation audience and the cherry audience each discover the other, which is exactly the cross-promotion a property with two revenue streams needs.
Business Outcome
Bishops Adelaide Hills has a consistent brand across web, signage and print, professional photography that has carried the business through multiple site generations, and a platform that promotes both accommodation and orchard produce from one place. Guests researching a Hills getaway meet the cherry farm as part of the appeal, and cherry customers discover that they can stay on the property, which is a more valuable arrangement than running the two separately.
Why JABA Was Chosen
JABA has worked with Bishops Adelaide Hills since around 2008, through the original photoshoot and site build, a full rebrand covering signage and print, a contemporary site rebuild and most recently an online shop. Nearly two decades of continuing work, with the scope growing each time, speaks for itself.
