The Problem

Centre State Exports is a locally owned and operated South Australian grain marketing company, accumulating grain for both export and domestic markets across most commodities grown locally: wheat, barley, malt barley, canola, lentils, faba beans, field peas, chick peas and lupins. Two things make their website harder than it looks. Grain prices move constantly, so the site is only useful if staff can update pricing and information themselves, immediately, without a developer. And grain marketing is a relationship business where growers choose between buyers who all quote from the same market, which means a website that only appears when someone needs a price is a website nobody visits.

What JABA Built

JABA originally designed the Centre State brand in 2001 and built the original website in 2004. The current site is a Progressive Web App built in 2020, featuring an easy to use CMS that lets Centre State staff keep all grain prices and information up to date themselves. It also features a customised Footy Tipping engine, which has proven a very powerful marketing tool: a highly popular competition that keeps customers coming back to the site throughout the season.

What Was Technically Interesting

The Footy Tipping engine is the genuinely clever part of this project, and it is a marketing idea solved with custom development rather than advertising spend. A grain marketing site would normally attract growers only at the moment they are checking a price, which is infrequent and entirely transactional. A tipping competition gives the same audience a reason to return weekly through the football season, keeps the Centre State brand in front of them between trades, and does it in a way that fits the customer base rather than feeling like a bolt-on gimmick. Building the engine as a custom feature inside the site, rather than linking out to a third-party competition, means the traffic and the engagement stay on Centre State's own platform where the grain pricing sits. The pricing side of the build solves the other half: an easy CMS means market information can be updated the moment it changes, which is what makes the site worth checking in the first place.

Business Outcome

Centre State Exports has a fast platform their own team controls, with current grain pricing that gives growers a reason to visit and a Footy Tipping competition that gives them a reason to keep visiting. The result is a website that functions as an ongoing customer relationship channel rather than a reference page, in an industry where staying front of mind between transactions is most of the marketing challenge.

Why JABA Was Chosen

JABA designed the Centre State brand in 2001 and has delivered every generation of their website since, from the original 2004 build through to the 2020 Progressive Web App. Nearly two decades of continuous work across three platform generations is the clearest endorsement a client can give.
