The Problem
Founded in 1995 and based at Harper's Field on One Tree Hill Road, the Golden Grove Football Club has grown from a handful of junior sides into one of Adelaide's northern suburbs' busiest community clubs, fielding seven senior grades for men and women alongside a full junior program running from Auskick through to Under 18s, boys and girls.
A club that size generates a constant stream of information. Fixtures and results across two competitions, training schedules, coach contacts, registration fees and government voucher instructions, uniform and heat policies, insurance details, presentation nights, sponsor commitments and club news all need to reach players, parents, supporters and partners quickly, and almost always on a phone.
The club's previous website made that harder than it needed to be. Content was scattered and awkward to maintain, and the volunteers running it were already stretched by the demands of running a football club. What the Kookaburras needed was one central platform that was fast on mobile, simple for the committee to update, and capable of growing as the club grows.
What JABA Built
JABA delivered a Progressive Web App built on its bespoke CMSv7, giving Golden Grove app-like speed on any device with content management its own volunteers can genuinely handle. Members visit the site once on a phone or tablet and install it straight to the home screen, with no app store, no download and no approval process, and from there the club can reach them directly with push notifications rather than hoping a post surfaces in a social feed.
The information architecture was built around how a football club actually works. Senior and junior football each sit on a single deep page with anchored navigation, so training schedules, coaches, registrations, player sponsorship, uniform and heat policies, insurance, medallists and presentations are all one tap away instead of buried in a menu tree. Fixtures and results have their own home, news and events run off the same publishing engine, and The Club section carries location, apparel, affiliates, club song, history, honour roll, life members, board of management, policies and the bar and kitchen.
Sponsors are handled as a proper module rather than a logo dump, with Major, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze tiers plus a sponsor band and enquiry form carried across every page. Most importantly, the site stays under the club's control, with JABA support available whenever the committee wants it.
What Was Technically Interesting
Match-day content is live, not hand-typed. The Match Day Centre embeds a fixture component that pulls Golden Grove's senior and junior fixtures and results directly from the league data feed, so scores and draws update themselves while the volunteers get on with running the club. PlayHQ links sit alongside them, carrying supporters through to Adelaide Footy League and SANFL Juniors for deeper statistics and ladders, and carrying families straight into registration, including South Australian Government Sports Voucher redemption.
Around that sits a reusable component library. Banner panels, multi-column panels, page tiles, image panels, award sliders, blog feeds, embedded video and contact forms are all assembled through the CMS, which means the committee builds and rearranges pages without touching code, and the club can add features as it expands. Kookaburra TV brings match and club video onto the home page through the same approach.
The search side deserves a mention too. App-shell sites often behave badly for crawlers, so every route on the Golden Grove PWA is served with its own page title, meta description and canonical URL, giving the club the speed of an app without giving up visibility for the searches that matter locally.
Business Outcome
Golden Grove now has a digital home that matches the size of the club. Players, parents and supporters find fixtures, fees, policies and news in one place and on the device they actually use, and the committee communicates directly through app-style push notifications instead of chasing people across social feeds. Volunteers spend less time wrestling with the website and more time running the club.
Sponsors gain real value from the arrangement, with tiered recognition, a sponsor band on every page and a platform that reflects well on the businesses attached to it. Recruitment benefits too, because prospective players, families and volunteers now meet a club that looks and feels professional from the first tap.
As the first site delivered under the Adelaide Footy League Club Website Initiative, the project also carries weight beyond Golden Grove itself. It sets the benchmark for the clubs that follow and proves the model works: a proven structure, a club's own identity on top of it, and a platform the club owns and runs.
Why JABA Was Chosen
JABA already builds and runs the Adelaide Footy League's own digital platform, a large-scale PWA serving 69 clubs across South Australia. When the League set out to give its clubs a stronger online presence, partnering with JABA meant bringing that same technology down to club level at a price the League-wide initiative makes possible.
Behind that sits more than 26 years as an Adelaide digital team and a long history of building for football clubs, sporting organisations and community groups. That experience matters, because a club website is not a corporate brochure. It is run by volunteers, updated on a Sunday night, read on a phone at the boundary line, and judged by whether a parent can find a start time in ten seconds.
Every AdFL club has its own history, identity and community, so the initiative provides the structure while the club supplies the character. Golden Grove's colours, photography, sponsors, football programs and personality come together in a site that is unmistakably the home of the Kookaburras.
Golden Grove is the first club website built under the initiative, and we hope it is the first of many. The program gives every Adelaide Footy League club access to a professionally designed, mobile-first platform at a price the League-wide arrangement makes possible, which for committees already stretched by the demands of running a club is a genuine chance to replace an outdated or fragmented online presence with one central home built specifically for club football. Clubs can read more and register their interest through the Adelaide Footy League Club Website Initiative.
