The Problem
JABA first partnered with the Whyalla Council in 2015, delivering a tourism website designed to promote the region's attractions, accommodation, events and visitor experiences. After many years of successful operation, the organisation recognised the need for a major upgrade to better meet the expectations of today's travellers and tourism operators. The original site was no longer keeping pace with modern mobile usage, visitor planning habits, or the growing need to manage tourism content and merchandise sales in one place.
What JABA Built
The new Whyalla website has been completely redeveloped on JABA's advanced CMSv7 Progressive Web App (PWA) platform, providing significantly improved performance, mobile usability and content management capabilities. The result is a fast, modern digital destination that delivers a seamless experience across desktop, tablet and mobile devices.
The project also included the development of a fully integrated online shop for the Whyalla Visitor Information Centre, enabling the organisation to sell merchandise, souvenirs and promotional products directly through the website, creating an additional revenue stream while extending the reach of the visitor centre beyond its physical location.
What Was Technically Interesting
A key focus of the redevelopment was enhancing the integration with the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse (ATDW). JABA implemented an advanced ATDW integration that not only imports tourism listings but also includes a custom ATDW editing system, allowing authorised staff to review, manage and enhance tourism content directly within the website environment. This provides greater flexibility and control while ensuring visitors receive accurate and engaging information.
To further improve the visitor experience, JABA developed a customised trip planner feature that enables travellers to research attractions, accommodation, dining and events, then build personalised itineraries before arriving in the region. This functionality encourages longer stays and helps visitors make the most of everything Whyalla has to offer.
Business Outcome
Built to support future growth, the new Whyalla website combines tourism promotion, visitor planning, content management and e-commerce into a single powerful platform. The result is a future-ready digital solution that helps showcase Whyalla as one of South Australia's most unique and rewarding tourism destinations, giving both visitors and tourism operators a modern, reliable way to engage with the region.
Why JABA Was Chosen
Having partnered with the Whyalla Council since 2015, JABA brought nearly a decade of understanding of the region's tourism goals and visitor behaviour to the redevelopment. That long-standing relationship, combined with JABA's experience building custom ATDW integrations and e-commerce functionality on the CMSv7 platform, made JABA the natural choice to take Whyalla's digital presence into its next phase.
